Hey everyone! Here's the tank again; I don't think I've posted it since march. Here are the specs: 30 breeder, 250w HQI Phoenix in Lumenarc3 mini pendant, driven by an electronic Coralvue ballast. I hope you enjoy the pics, and feel free to comment!

Thanks everyone! This was my test to see how well I would be able to keep SPS. With a little prayer, I'm planning my next tank to be 48"lx48"wx16"h. I should be setting that one up in about a month. These corals will be the seeds for the system.

Beautiful tank. What are you using for filtration? Skimmer? Also are you using any sort of calcium reactor or dosing manually?

Thanks for the response everyone! I've been couped up without internet for a few months, so this is my welcome back post. I'll try to answer everyone in order.

Danfrith: Thanks! I use a 250w MH DE Phoenix 14k bulb in a Lumenarc III pendant, driven by a 250w electronic Coralvue ballast. The color seems to really come out with this bulb yet it has quite a bit of power.

Canadian: I'm not sure what I could truely attribute the growth to, but I'll explain my dosing regiment bellow. I do think that some of it can be attributed to high flow around 70x turnover rate.

Mcliffy2: Thanks! I have to courses of action; hopefully, the first will work. Plan A: I'll use aptasia killer or kalkwasser to kill them section by section throughout the week. The next week I'll be following up for the stragglers. Small WC's will be performed throughtout. Plan B: Cut large frags off the rocks for the future 175g. The hydroids don't seem to annoy the corals.

LUVSPS: That kind of is my FTS (:)) because the tank is so shallow I designed the setup to be view from the top. You see alot of the undersides if you view from the sides. Thanks for the encouragement!

EnFuego: Here's my setup: 40lbs LR, Excaliber SV2 Skimmer (made locally; it's a simple venturi), and about 70x the turn over rate throughout the tank.

Here's the dosing:
Tropic Marin Bio Ca, Mg, Strontium, and Lugols everyday
Reef Buffer, Builder, Plus, and Trace throughout the week
Kent Tech I weekly and Kalkwasser dripped each night
20% WC at least once every two weeks
Reefnutrition Phytofeast and Rotifeast every night

Thanks again everyone! I'm off to work....at a LFS.

When you view the tank (from the top), I assume you always have to turn off the flow?

Also, How long has this system been running?

Koz.

VEry nice tank indeed, but what are those powerheads you are using and do you run a sump at all?

kaserpick
09/28/2008, 08:50 AM
Wow, thanks for the replies all! I assumed that this post was dead, so sorry I didn't reply sooner.

Kuramura: I'm using a 50/50 blend of Oceanic and IO because they're so cheap and I'm a budget. The ratio can very depending on where my parameters are. If my Alk is high and Ca+ a little lower than I would like, then I'll run straight Oceanic. If my Alk is low and Ca+ plenty high, then I'll run IO. I run my lights for 10 hours.

Fsurocks99: Thanks bro!

Kozmo's Reef: Yes, I do have to turn off the flow if I want to truly view the corals, but that doesn't happen often. I still get a good feel for the color while the ph's are on. The tank has just reached its 10 month mark.

Adtravels: Thanks, it's just easier to go BB, but I really do like the look of sand.

Hargitai: Thank you for the compliment! I'm running a Koralia 4, Koralia 1, and Koralia Nano. The wall the powerheads are on is the false wall I siliconed in to make a back chamber on the 30g breeder tank. The water overflows, gets skimmed and is then returned my a Mag 3.

Thanks again all, please post any questions you have. The system is simple and nothing smart about it. I may take a day or two to reply, but I will. :)

Fantastic job man! Looking great!

I have a similar flow and lighting setup although no corals yet (despite the tank being up for 2.5 years LOL..).. I have 2 Tunze 6000 on a multicontroller so if both pumps are at max there's about 90x turnover.. I have it going from 40x-90x in pulses..

I also have 250w MH (14.5k giesemann bulb)... Hopefully my corals do as well as yours some day!

Thanks Roper512! I've just purchased 2 Tunze Nano Waveboxes for my 65; hopefully, I'll be able to get some great flow with those. I'm sure your corals will look amazing as long as you keep up with the chemistry. Your setup sounds great; I love the dimensions on your tank!
