Hi, I purchase the 250w mh fixture from
fellow reefer today w/ m80 ballast and phoenix 14k
bulb.
I was wondering what is general lifespan on HQI bulb
as M80 ballast would overdrive them(let's say 6 to 8hrs a day)?
bulb has been used for 3months, should I get the new bulb
or Can I still use it? I dun have any corals at the moment so
if I could use it bit more, is it okay?

thanks

I would say you should get 6 more months out of it, but I have noticed that the phoenix bulbs seem to shift color sooner then others. It is gradual, so it is hard to notice, but side by side with a new one it is very easy to notice.

I agree about the Pheonix bulbs. Love the color but they lose too much too quickly.

Have to change mine out every 6 months.

Should add, I just got a new set (( 2*250 over my 75 )), on the 1st of September, and was shocked and the difference over the old ones. Have already noticed a few corals showing better color. I didn't write down the date of the last bulbs, but I want to say it was around Xmas, so if it was, I would never go more then 9 months again, or at least have that be the limit.

It is easy to see, but hard to describe, but I will try. There doesn't seem to be as much pop, and it is more dull. Maybe a slight shift towards yellow. It really isn't that bad, until you compare it side to side.

Depends on the bulb itself. I have used Ushio DE HQI and those tended to last about a year. Phoenix needs to be changed every 6 months. Those have an early spectral shift.

I will agree with the comment on Ushio's. I always get a full 12 months out of them.
