Hi,

I just bought a used Aqua Medic 18 watt UV sterilizer and now i have to get a pump for it. to use it hob. My tank is 65 gallons + 10 gallons sump.
I saw on fosters and smith that it needs 200 to 400 gph. Is this for any size of tank? I want it to kill any bacteria or parasites and not only algea spores.
What pump do you recommend ?

You could run a maxi jet power head like an Mj 900 or something like that. The slower the flow the more organisms you will kill, including good ones. I play to run my 25 watt aqua medic with a maxi jet 900.

Also, if you plan to locate the UV above the pump location you will most likely need a stronger pump than a MJ 1200 as they can not support much head height. I will be running mine strait from the sump.

I have mine tee'd off of a Little Giant 4MD. This pump puts out about 700 gph at 4 feet of head. I'm planning on obtaining an Eheim 1250 and tee'ing off to my LifeGuard 25 watt UV and to my CA reactor. Put a valve in front of the UV inlet and slow the flow to about 300 gph (maybe slower).... The object is to increase dwell time and increase the likely hood of eradicating all the evil organisms. If you're rushing water through the thing at 700 gph dwell time is diminished and the bad guys that you want to scramble their chromosomes will not be affected.

Well then maybe i could use a mag 5 and divert some of the flow back to the sump? And if i got a phosphate reactor later on i could use the rest of the flow for that? Would that work? How can you tell how much flow you've got ?

Would a mj1200 work?

Well i guess a MJ 900 would be too much flow for the Aqua Medic 18 watts then. What i found on the web site is that it needs 132 gph maximun flow for saltwater tanks. It's more for freshwater.

A maxi-jet 400 would probably be better i guess for my steriliser.
