What kits are widely used, and seem to be accurate in reading phos?

Hanna Low Range Photometer. For the hobbiest kits, some people like Salifert for PO4.

After the Hanna colorimeter (which below 0.05 ppm may not be as accurate after all due to an accuracy of +/- 0.04 ppm but easy to read) I would say that after trying several the best next could be the Hach PO-19.

you can visually see algae as a problem= phosphates[/done]

okay.... let me re-word that..... below $100!
I am assuming there is nothing in the market that is as accurate as Hanna, otherwise just look for algae huh?

I use the Elos kit and it seems very stable to me (meaning same reading every time). I think it's fairly easy with this kit to see the different colors, assuming you can distinguish between various shades of blue. I'm going to buy the Hanna photometer though, as waiting to see algae seems like a bad answer for me. Once that happens I think it's too late. In my experience, once you have certain types of algae growing, you have a real uphill battle getting rid of it.

I've used the Hach PO-19 for more than a decade. If you have very good eyes, you can read to 0.02 to 0.03 ppm at the low end, maybe 0.04 to 0.05 is you have less good eyes, and I have verified that it is accurate from there to at least 0.5 ppm or so. :)
