View Full Version : Advice on fragging a chalice (Mycedium) LPS

The Alien Eye chalice coral (Mycedium) you see in this top pic has now grown down the edges of the rock (bottom pic) on which I glued the original frag, and the edges are touching the sand. So I figure it's best to frag it now (especially since we have a frag swap coming up!).

Any advice on fragging? Do I just take a chisel to the exoskeleton (and rock) and chop away? I presume I cut in between the eyes, so to speak!

Thanks.

you could use a dremel

Chisel will end up destroying the piece. Scoring in with a dremel and cutting right through will work for more precise frags but is real messy. The cleanest (for you and the coral) way is a wet tile saw from the bottom up right to the tissue, then cut the tissue with a fresh razor.

Are you saying you use the band saw and cut straight through the flesh also, or you score the back with the band saw and then razor the flesh? I've got a saw coming and am looking for pointers.
