So my first 100% impulse buy in many a year......

I've always wanted blue stripe bicinctus, but have never seen any, and doubt I will at this rate  . Then I saw some clowns at a LFS, labeled as Aussie Clarkii Clowns. Simply stunning! I bought them. Seriously considering a new tank for just them. Anyways, anyone else seen Aussie Clarki's before?

That is a flawless pair! In that last pic, the little males pelvic fins are almost bigger than he is.
I was told that the clarkii I have was from Australia, but after seeing yours I highly doubt it.

Project Reef
09/22/2008, 07:28 PM
I'm not sure if those came out of Australia or not, more than likely they're Vanuatu/Solomon Isle Clarks. They are some of the prettiest clownfish out there. The most sought after morphs are the ones with only two stripes, exta-long pelvic fins and intense coloration. One of my fav. clowns for sure. The only downside to them is that they are generally very aggressive. Nice find Peter!

Thanks for all the compliments folks. I have learned from experience that in fact gorgeous clowns are VERY few and far between. I've missed opportunities in the past. Not this time :)

Thanks for the info Ali. I suspect that EVEN if I was able to catch and remove the clowns currently in my main display, these clarkii's would still upset the balance I have going with all my fish. So, their own system they will get!

Will they get as big as the regular Clarkiis??

SDguy
09/22/2008, 11:41 PM
The female is a good 4-5" already.

I was hoping since these are clarkii and not chrysopterus, I have a MUCH better chance at survival and avoiding the brook (which I will deal with if need be).... Opinions? Am I kidding myself?

Project Reef
09/23/2008, 01:36 AM
Peter, these particular Clarks are MUCH, MUCH, less prone to brook than other clowns. I've probably gone through about 20 or so pairs over the years of these Solomon/Vanuatu "Australian" clowns and I can't think of a time where I lost any of them due to disease. I can recall losing a couple to jumping out of the tanks though.

adtravels
09/23/2008, 07:05 AM
Any large wild clowns are prone to being poor shippers, I recently aquired a pair of akniydos and although no disease issues and great eaters they are shy, very and dont tolerate any movement around the tank which is a 60 cube, I think yours will need a big system to be happy as they range along way from their anemones in the wild.

The wild caught melanistic clarks we get here are in thailand are terrible disease magnets, they are found in mertens anemones and you see the swimming 5 to 10 meters from the anemone on dives in the andaman. You see lots in the lfs but nearly all die quickly. I dont think yours are from vanuatu what with the third bar present, a better guess would be coral sea between new guinea and the northern tip of australia.

If they were labelled aussie then this makes more sense to me. The look good and strong, how do they eat?

I mix fresh chopped prawn, scallops and their roe, oysters, cyclopese, formula one pellets (crushed) and chopped nori (algae very important in clownfish diets) chop it real fine and freeze in a ziplock, they will go crazy for it.

good luck

black finned ones usually found in mertens or other carpets. Just dont keep yours in a carpet, should be good, even then they may not change. Colour changes are not unheard of though.

adtravels
09/25/2008, 05:00 AM
just to clarify andaman thai clarks are black with a yellow tail and 3 white stripes when adult and in a mertens.
Sub adults and juvies nearly always are found in heteractis aurora, the subadults have black bodies, three stripes and yellow caudal and pelvic fins and a black dorsal. the juvies are yellow with three white stripes.

I have dived many times there and never seen an exception to this rule.
funnily enough There are always red saddle with bubble tips and mags with either yellow skunks or occillaris. I have never seen a clarks here in a bta or a mag.

I wonder which anemone yours was with in the wild?? I would be edging towards a bubble tip.

elegance coral
09/25/2008, 07:15 AM
All of the fins, other than the dorsal, remain yellow/orange on my clarkii regardless of where it's living. The black color will fade if I remove her from the haddoni, though. As long as she's in the haddoni, she is jet black.

OK, well, they are going to get a RBTA more than likely, eventually. Right now, they are eating flake and mysis, so I'm happy. The male is a bit skinny, and doesn't eat as much, so trying to fatten him up....

cayenne
09/28/2008, 03:07 PM
They will love a RBTA. Here is a picture of our female in hers. After she was added to the tank she was in it in less than 2 hours.

This was a mated pair that I picked up, that were inseparable during quarantine, but as soon as the female got the RBTA, the male isn't allowed anywhere near it. He is now hosting in a Devil's Hand leather.

Beautiful pics and clowns! I just saw some HUGE ones like your female up at a wholesaler....but none with the yellow finnage like mine. Incidentally, they also had chrysops there. Two were toast, but two looked perfect. So happy to have gotten that "look" with a LOT less trouble :D

SDguy
09/30/2008, 12:43 PM
I'm very happy to report that they are eating NLS pellets, especially the male, who was showing signs of becoming skinny. He had a very nice round belly after the pellets though.

I feel they REALLY want an anemone though, since they will bring extra food to the Mag7 behind which they sleep :(

Just thought I'd update...

The clowns are doing well. I've decided to keep the 60g that was used as a QT for my acros a while ago, and set it up as a permanent display. I purchased a 6 bulb TEK T5 fixture for it. I assume I am still limited to a BTA of some sort, yes?

My only complaint is that the male did not keep the nice yellow dorsal fin :(

You should be able to go with a carpet in a tank that size, Haddoni is probably your best bet.

But BTAs are always great and easy.

Where in San Diego do you live? I would love to come by and see your tank.

SDguy

I actually moved the RBTA from the main display tank where it was simply expanding/killing too many corals, into the 60g with the clarkii clowns. They of course dove in within an hour. I'll get some pics once the nem looks a little more happy.

At least the loss of their home didn't seem to affect the percs too much :D

Due to issues with me moving and such, I ended up giving the pair to a local breeder last year. Well, full circle now, the breeder is dismantling his shop, so the clowns ae back in my possession. The male has a very pinched forehead, though. :( I'm hoping to fix that with some heavy PE mysis feeding.

Some great news to report. The pinched male's forehead is almost completely filled back in. Multiple daily feedings of NLS pellets and live blackworms did the trick. Now, to find them a proper permanent home...

Their permanent home is still undecided, but they are both doing great in my what used to be QT tank.... The male has almost no trace of the pinched forehead :) Notice though that the male's pelvic fins ended up turning all black, even with no merten's nem.

Really cool fishes............

The big difference between this variety.........I mean Coral Sea........(founded in SouthEast PNG/Great Barrier/and Solomons)............and the variety of the Original Description..............founded in Indian Ocean (Maldives/SriLanka/Andaman Sea)..............is about the soft part of the Dorsal Fin...........

In the Original Clark.........Amphiprion clarkii (Bennett, 1830).........the soft part of the Dorsal Fin is Black...........bordered by a thin white line...........

And in the Variety of Coral Sea............the soft part of the Dorsal Fin is Yellow..........

Even in Melanistic fishes.........hosted in Stichodactyla mertensii.........the soft part of the dorsal fin is Yellow...........

In this variety.........a white caudal peduncle is present...........as well as in the Indian Ocean variety.................

But in New Caledonia/Vanuatu variety.........the white band of the caudal peduncle is absent..........and the black mantle is retracted............giving the apparence of "veil tail "...........this is the name given of Vanuatu/NC variety........

There are 5 varieties of this kind of Clark.........all of them have Yellow Tail..........with no sexual Dichromatism..........Males and Females have Yellow tail.........

1- Arabian sea - Persian Gulf/Oman Gulf

Video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZPspAXKlJc

2- India/Maldives/Andaman Sea

Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBWD5KXECBk

3- West Australia (ABCC)- Ningaloo Reef

Video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvtLyNQXRwI

4- Coral Sea (PNG/GBR/Solomons)

Video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRfVBFFFg1E

5 - Vanuatu / New Caledonia

Yellow Pelvic and Anal fins in Clark“s.............. of all varieties...........means that they are hosted in Entacmaea quadricolor............or Heteractis crispa.......

When these fishes are hosted in Stichodactyla mertensii...........their Pelvic and Anal fins turn Black.........

The snout in most of the cases turns grayish..........

These are Melanistics........from Indian Ocean variety.......from Original Description.............compare with the video #2 hosted in BTAs.........

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-_pF4YIbOY

They belongs to the same population (Indian Ocean)............but fishes hosted in Stichodactyla mertensii..........have black Pelvic and Anal fins........

In Coral Sea variety............they will keep the Yellow Triangle.........at the tip of the soft part of the Dorsal Fin...........

Even in Melanistics............

Just like we see the pic above...........

About the Anemones :

Heteractis magnifica belongs to the same Family of Stichodactyla mertensii..............and Stichodactyla haddoni.............

The Family Sthicodactylidae.......

There is a tendency to the Melanism..........

I think that the forehead will become darker...........and maybe the Pelvic and Anal fins too.......

Maybe the snout will remain colored............??? And not turn to pale gray.........as happens in Merten“s.........

Bright Yellow color in Clark“s are seen in Entacmaea quadricolor..........Family Actiniidae..........including forehead and the snout.........

Look these Mad Dog pictures.........of Melanistics from Madang - PNG..........

http://www.messersmith.name/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/genevieve_clarks_anemonefish_amphiprion_clarkii_IMG_4282.jpg

Yuri Barros

Aussie Clark“s of this thread......belongs to the same Variety founded in GBR and Solomons............

Its a Coral Sea Realm.........

These Black are Melanistics...........

Founded mainly in Stichodactyla mertensii............

Only in the south west Coral Sea (New Caledonia and Vanuatu islands)...........exists a different variety.........

But South East PNG..........GBR..........and Solomons are the same variety......

Remember that in the late Pleistocene Era...........during the last glacial maxima.............the sea level was 140 mts bellow actual level............

And Australia was conected with PNG...........forming a Continent called Sahul..........

This variety was isolated in Coral Sea............

This pictires from Sustainable Aquatics.........I suspect that they came from West Australia............called ABCC - Australian Black Clark“s Clownfish.......

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nemrf3r1AxQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eL9Z0UKKMLk

They have different band shapes............and the yellow color of the tail is a bit transluscent..............not solid Yellow as seen in the other varieties...........

Try google with Exmouth / Ningaloo Reef..........this is the Geographic range of this variety..........

And if someone find this in PNG..........maybe is in the extreme South West...................

But I never see pics from this variety there..............never...........

All my pictures findings was in Exmouth/ Ningaloo reef.........

Thet seems to be one of the rarest variety...........due a small geographic range..............

Awesome fishes............

http://www.messersmith.name/wordpress/2010/03/21/crab-bites-man/

South East PNG fishes belongs to the same kind of Clark“s from GBR..........

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ross_coleman_photographs/4271182928/sizes/l/in/photostream/

Some fishes have well marked third band.........at caudal peduncle............and some don“t have it............

Ok. Reason I asked is my back clarkiis (presumably Australian lineage) ditched their green bubble tip anemone like it wasn't even there and moved into my new Haddoni pretty much as soon as I added it to my reef tank. So I thought may be their origin had something to do with it.

It seems that they like Stichodactylidae family.........than Actiniidae.......

But they are founded in all host anemones in the wild...........including Cryptodendrum adhaesivum..........

Frequently they start settle in Nursery Anemones.........such Beaded Anemone Heteractis aurora........or Macrodactyla doreensis..........

From Magang - PNG

http://www.messersmith.name/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/beaded_anemone_heteractis_aurora_IMG_4337.jpg

BTA“s in this region is often ocuppied by Amphiprion melanopus or Premnas biaculeatus............

Some times Amphiprion clarkii use these anemones as host..........like this juvenile.............

This is what I find fascinating about Clarkii. Their adaptability is what I think makes them unique as opposed to other clowns.

Yes.........Clark“s is a fascinanting group.........and they have unique Biology..............

And also there are 10 different varieties............each one Geographically isolated..........and showing unique features............

5 of them have Yellow Tail..........and do not show sexual dichromatism......3 of them founded in Indian Ocean..........and 2 in Coral Sea........

And 5 of them have White Tail..........and 3 of them show sexual dichromatism.........one founded in Wallacea to Ryukyus.........one in Caroline Islands.........one in Marianas.........and 2 in Japan Izu...........and Ogasawara.............

Very nice fish and anemone. The anemone looks extremely beautiful in person. Fish store in studio city has same coloration mag for sale and it's awesome.

Yo, how are the clowns doing? Have you tried to catch the fry and raise it?

SDguy

They breed constantly... as soon as eggs hatch a new clutch is laid. I haven't done anything with the fry...

An update on the mag, going on 5 months. The clowns continue to breed constantly.

Thanks Davo! Oh, those are RBTA's. You can barely see the mag at the top of the first pic... the clowns prefer the RBTA's.

I'll try to get a better shot with the underwater camera this weekend. BTW let me know if you come across any green with red/purple base BTA's locally :)

They laid eggs last night, and I thought to myself, hmmm, how old is she, so I thought I'd check this thread. 8 years now in my care.... Nice!
