I have an undergravel filter that came with my 55g tank. This will be a FISH ONLY tank. I will have larger crushed coral as my base. Not sure if i should use it or not. I will use an over the back filter no matter what. My question is:

Is the undergravel filter worth the extra work and cost?

How deep should the crushed coral be with or without the UGF?

Should i go with over the back bio wheel filter only or use the UGF as well?

Thanks for the help. Now to this site. Looks cool!

Welcome to RC. I woudl pitch the UGF. You should have live rock in the system. The Penguen filter should be used for runing carbon. I would pitch the bio wheel its self though, from what i have read the just trap nitrates.

The sand bed is up to what you want it for

Deep sand bed(DSB) 4+ for nutruient removal, or... if you plan to have any burrowing fish should be taken in to account.

Otherwise i would go shallow sand bed( SSB) 1-3''

I havn't seen to many Bare bottom (BB)tanks out side of breeders. But i do like BB tanks.
