I got a nice small-medium favia on the cheap that has about half of it dead(skeleton) and the other half doing well.

I kept it for about a month in the substrate with the dead half buried. It had some more tissue loss from substrate irritation, so I moved it up on the rocks.

I failed with a small favites piece when I got started and I haven't tried another one until now.

How does this grow with the dead part? Will the tissue return to the dead portion, or will it just grow around it?

It should grow over the dead portion eventually, I have a few acans that I brought back from the dead nicely

Mine was similar when I got it. It has grown over most of the parts that had just been skeleton.

You should smooth out the part that is dead skeleton. It will grow over it much faster. Use either two part epoxie (ie apoxie scuplt) or grind away the skeleton to smooth it out.
