this is the main idea
10g cube tank with starphire glass with sump below in desk
http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp54/kfreeman77/tankidea1b.jpg
havent got much farther into than this
but the idea hit me while thinking about a tank i could have on my desk
then i thought why not cut the faces of the drawers and make a door on the front for a sump/ equipment area
the cabinet would be 23x28x11.5
so enough room for a sump with 10g of water in it
let me know what you all think

Looks good.. go for it!

I see no problems so far.

what will produce more heat 2 70w mh or 1 150w mh

y not 1 70w mh (less heat)? i think thats should be enough.

i know i want the wattage to be around 150
i was just thinking it would spread the light a little better with 2 de bulbs instead of one

been thinking about equipment
the less hardware in the tank the better
how about a mag 5 for the return hooked up to a squid
for alternating current maybee even put the hydor flo on the 2 returns
im thinking i should end up with around 300gph flow

i really am liking this idea more and more as i think about it
i hope to be able to start buying the tank and equipment by chriastmas time and have it running sometime this spring

that said i would like to hear any ideas about this

im thinking mostly zoas and rics and afew sps

as far as live stock its either a mantis shrimp
or a pair of percula clowns and a small rbta not really sure if the tank would be big enough for a pair of clowns and an anemone though

i think i will get the tank from glass cages rimless starphire 13.2 inchs sqaure

little of the real world
here is a pic of where this will all happen

Looks pretty cool. I see you already have an abundance of cords under the desk.

there also seems to be a fruit loop
you dont really notice stuff until its posted on the internet in high res

here is what i think is the final tank design
the overflow is 3/4" from the top and is around 5" across give or take to get the bulkheads in

How many bulkheads of what size are you considering?

Freemans Reef
10/05/2008, 10:25 PM
3 altogether
one3/4 for the drain 2 1/2"for the return

Freemans Reef

the lighting will be 1 150w de mh with a 14k pheonix bulb
with 1 or 2 28w cf for actinics
the holes in the back are for 4" fans to reduce heat
the overall height of the top is 5"
my house stays around 70 degrees so i hope this should be enough cooling power
would it help to put a sheet of glass on top of the tank to keep it cool?
http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp54/kfreeman77/finaltankwlighting.jpg
im still searching for a really good skimmer for this system everything i like is just to big i want a very powerful skimmer but at a 20g size never really seen proof that you can over skim a tank but all the great skimmers seem like overkill
although a cskim would be cool hmmm.....

sheet of glass over tank will actualy make it hotter by putting fans in the canopy you are trying to cool the tank down by evaporation and by putting glass over the tank you arnt letting that evaporation occur and you are getting poor gas exchange

Freemans Reef

i really dont want alot of evaporation in the hood
i was wondering if the glass with high airflow would keep the hood from heating up in the first place thus not heating the tank as much
i will put a fan in the sump or make a cooling tower for evaporative cooling
not to worried about the gas exchange as a skimmer and sump should more than handle the tanks requirements

glass cages told me that i need a 2 1/2" space for a 3/4" bulkhead does anyone know where i could find a smaller 3/4" bulk head
im not ready to scrape this idea
i could always get the tank made then drill it myself if i could find a smaller bulkhead
maybe one return with an om squirt
i dont know the footprint on the squirt
also could i run 1/2" from the pump to the bulhead then run 3/4 to the squirt

hi , freemans reef

i`m also building a 20g nano with a sump system ,i`m probably gonna use an aqua medic hob skimmer .
i dont know if they sell them in the usa , but in europe its the better brand reef supply`s.
dimensions are 10'x10'x2'
i`m gonna hang him in the sump.

You can get a 1/2" bulkhead (would require 1 1/8" hole). What about an ecosystem pro series refugium. They have a skimmer already in them. The dimensions would be 24 x 10 x 12.

hi tnt looking for something in sump
good luck!

aqcons
i really like the idea of the ecosystems pro series but i cant find it in the 24" with a skimmer

here is a tank update same display size but with a 4" extention on the back for the overflow and returns
http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp54/kfreeman77/tank2.jpg
hopefully glass cages will be a litle more receptive to this design

The Ecosystem Pro 2410 dimensions are 24 x 10 x 12. They do make it and can be ordered. PM me and I'll let you know where. Also, you can do the ecosystem without a skimmer. I have 2 reef tanks without skimmers running on the ecosystem.

if you don't mind the overflow & return going down the back, check out Gl*******s.com (http://glass-holes.com/) for some excellent overflows

this (http://www.fancykoioutlet.com/supply/uniseal.htm) might work if you need to keep the holesize small....

another idea i had when designing something similar in my head was to angle the back "wall" on say a 30-degree angle so you only loose the large depth required for the overflow & return at the bottom & i think that your rockwork would have a nice slant & stability at the back
