Looking at setting up a new Reef. Which should I go with? 120 gallon 48x24x24 Or 125 gallon 72x21x18.

Please don't suggest anything more. You will just confuse my situation.

The front to back depth of a 120 makes a huge difference. I have a 125 and the 18" depth really limits me on my rock scape.
A 72x21 or 24x24... now that's the best of both worlds ( sorry... I know you said not to but, I couldn't resist ).

Depends on how you want to aquascape and what kind of livestock you have or will get.
I have a 125 and the tangs I have love the long tank and swimming length.

I am not really sure. Right now I have sps, lps, clams. I am torn in between. I am kinda looking for help to decide what to go with. 125 will give more swim room in length but the 120 will allow more depth for stacking rocks, corals, etc. I am really torn, I have been thinking about this for 2 months and still undecided.

It really does depend on what YOU want. A 125 makes a nice long reef....and the 120 makes a nice deep one (shrug). Probably cheaper lighting on the 120 because of the 48" length.

If you have the length and the width, you will not be sorry with 72" x 24" x 24".

Sorry, I know you said not to confuse the choices, but that would be excellent. I'd look for a good deal on a used setup.

Joyce <P>Actually, that is what I wish I would have done--gone with a 180 for the depth and the length. But with the 125, it is nice to not have to worry about the extra depth with the lighting if you are going with clams and sps.

I have a 125 FOWLR that my bird wrasse loves because of the swimming room. It is the focal point of the room.

I 100 could be more practical from the cost of the light to the ability to stack the live rock.

I think the decision depends on what you want to keep and the space in your home.

Good Luck. I am sure you will enjoy whichever one you choose.

If I were to decide, I would go with the longer tank rather than the deeper tank.

I would say 120g. I think they are a perfect for a mid size reef. Your lighting options are gonna be better, and I just think they look nicer.

For a reef tank having more space front to back is more desirable given that most corals expand sideways.
Also given the live rock requirement a litle more depth will provide for some swiming space for fish so IMO the 24" front to back and 24" depth will be my preference.

I doubt it!! Nice size also (60 x 24 24?).

48" length is just right for me as I don't want a tank that overwhelms the room. 4 feet is cute and the 24" depth/height is just right for nice aquascaping and placement of corals. Also with 48", I only need just 2 halide bulbs.

I know you don't want something else suggested, but I was trying to decide between these two sizes before too. The 125 was too narrow, but the 120 wasn't long enough, so I went with my current 180 that is 72x24x24. It gives you alot more options.

A 48" tank will give you a lot more options on your lighting if you go t-5's.

Ok so if I go 120 aqueon brand. should I get (option 1) built in overflow or just drill and do the (option 2) Calflo style overflows.

120, if youre going to go 72" go bigger than 125.
