Is there any way other than a chiller to lower the temp in my tank. I have an Aquapod 24 and the temp is at 85F. I dont want to buy an expensive chiller. I have been disappointed with the tank. I thought these tanks had everything needed but it seems you have to buy a ton more stuff to get it to function properly.

Welcome to ReefCentral!

What is your lighting? How low does the temperature drop with the lights off?

Just the lights that came with it. I think they are T5's. The temps doesn't seem to come down with the lights off. I thought it was the pump, so for the high temps and more flow, I switched the stock pump for a MJ1200. The temps did not come down. The temp was around 79-80 during the summer b/c of the A/C. Now with the heat set around 74-75F the temp is at 85 in the tank. Some one recommended a ICA chiller. How much are they and where can I find one. How can I use a chiller with the stock hood. What are some other ways to lower the temp?

Make sure that your thrmometer is accurate. It may be that it is just reading too high.

It's amazing how quickly a simple fan can drop temps.

Are you using a digital thermometer?

I have a digital thermometer. What kind of fans are you talking about?

Fans work great for me, I have one of those array fans on the back of the tank and even with my MH my tank barely fluctuates.

How can I mount that with the hood on. I thought I saw somewhere, where guys with the hood where mounting additional fans under the hood. Is that possible.

you should check nano customs and see what they have, I know they have different fan kits.

I would go with adding an extra fan into the hood. The 24AP only comes with one fan but does have another slot for a second fan. I don’t know that much about the 24 but I have the 12AP and it also comes with the extra slot for a second fan as well as an extra plug for the second fan. I would assume the 24 also has the extra plug. I did a quick search and found the following threads that show the second slot and have some info on adding a second fan.

Mine came with two fans. Should I replace these. I have already replaced the stock pump with a MJ 1200. That didn't help with heat. How did you guys adapt the MJ outlet with the tubing going to the outlet on the tank. I think I'm restricting the pump.

i have an acrylic lid and i cut two slits into it so the lid could be put on and the fan can still sit on the rim

you have a pic of your hood/lid

I would suggest using a MJ900 (8.5w/230gph) instead of MJ1200 (20w/295gph). That's should cool the tank down a bit. If you want more flow, add a Koralia nano (3.5w/240gph). Also, consider removing the stock hood and use a 20" sunpod 70W MH. This way, you have more light and NO chiller.

for temporary cool downs you can put ice in a ziplock and put it in the back chamber... i'm not familiar with the all in ones so can't help with the permanent solution

I have a Koralia now. I'll try the MJ900. But the Sunpod is out of the question. Beyond budget.

im running my 10 gallon with no hood, and i have T5's. right now i have temp swings from 74 to 77F and i just throw a fan on it for 5 minutes. it brings the temp down and i don't have to worry about it at all.

Im ordering these next week when i get a paycheck for them. to solve the problem of having something that looks like an industrial fan next to my tank : )

I have a couple small water bottles in the freezer for emergencies, just in case I have an overheating problem.
And it's RODI water in the bottles if they leak.

What are you running in your back chamber? If you don't have a skimmer in the back and just running carbon, I would even suggest getting a even smaller pump then a MJ900 back there. Lesser the watt in water the less heat you'll have.

Chemipure and another phosphate remover, filter floss and one of the stock sponges.
