How bad is 40ppm Nitrate?

Just tested my nitrate and its at 40ppm, is that high?

Best is 0, mine usually run about 20-40 but I have a soft coral tank and they seem to better with a little higher level so I don't worry about it. It mainly tells you that you have stuff decaying in your tank and you may need more flow or better filtration or more frequent water changes.

what are you keeping in your tank?, if just fish then not bad, could be better but not bad, if sensitive hard corals then bad, if soft corals then not too bad but you need to reduce to 10 ish or under, but not too bad, so what you keeping in there

As stated above, Tell us what your keeping in your tank. Different builds can work with different levels.
