I have a new 120g (48x24x24) I have a sump/refugium but it isn't drilled for an external pump.. I do have an Iwaki 40RLT that I'm not using that might do the job but I also was considering the Eheim 1260 and just running it in the sump.

Since my sump isn't drilled for an external pump should I just go with an internal one? Thanks

I'm using the Eheim 1260 in sump. It's very quiet and doesn't heat up the tank.

I usually don't like submersible pumps because they are so toy like. I always feel like I am going to break them. For this reason I chose to run a small gorman rupp external pump. Draws 60 watts and is very quiet. All of the parts are replaceable should something crack or wear out. With that said, eheim has a great rep and is very reliable. I run a 1250 externally with no problems so far.

If you dont want to drill the sump than I would say run a Eheim if you want it qwiet. I like Mag pumps a lot to but thay are a lot louder than a Eheim.

is your tank single or dual flow? even if it is single flow, i would suggest to go bigger pump either internal or external. The iwaki you have would make perfect external pump. I have the same set up as your 48x24x24 and i run iwake 30rlt. I would love to have biggder pump but it is how it came when i bought the setup used. You be glad to have bigger pump as it give you the higher turn over.

the Eheim 1260 which is only at 635 gph which is small for your tank i think. Bigger pum, better the turn over.

You don't want your turnover too high from you pump. Turnover should be from your powerheads. Let the water have more time in the sump with the skimmer. I wouldn't go any higher than a 1260 or Mag12.

i totally agree for not having too much turn over but with eihem 1260 is not enough it is only rates at 640 versus mag 12 rates at 1200. so i am not sure where you come about having too much turn over

640 gph would be perfect IMO.

I have a MAG12 on my 120. If i had to do it over again, i would get an ocean runner with anywhere from 600 - 800 GPH.

Ocean Runner 3500 is a very good choice, equal to the Eheim 1262 but slightly more efficient and less than half the price.

I've had both a mag and eheim. I use to run a mag12 on my 90 and it ran great, but it warmed up the tank a little. I then switched to a eheim 1262. It's rated for about 900gph, but it runs nearly silent and it runs much much cooler than the mag 12 I use to run. It is a little costly, but imo it's worth every penny. good luck

I am using Mag12 in sump with 8' head and even though it runs little hot but I like it especially my sump is in basement/crawl space and now weather is in my favor also :)

I am running dual mag 9.5 on my 150, it is perfect, if one goes out keeps all my SPS, in good shape!

i use a eheim 1260 as a return on a 180g and it works great.

I would do an eheim or ocean runner, I ended up getting an ocean runner on my 48x24x24 and it worked great. In retrospec I would have gone with the eheim because it's a bigger brand. I'm also using the OR on my 58g that I'm finishing the plumbing on tonight.

I had a Mag7 on my old 55 and not only did it kapoop in less than 1 year it was HOT and loud. All my other tanks have been nano's and pico's so they had mini eheim's :)

I run an eheim 1260 on my 90g. The return is just that, a return from the sump. It is not for increased flow in my tank. This ensures my sump flow rate is slow enough for the skimmer to do it's job well. Little heat transfer, silent, energy efficient. Do it again in a second.

i also use an eheim 1260 on my 90g and its great.. you dont want a super high flow rate, thats what the PHs are for.
