something stuck in the impeller?
The smokey smell is the electrical motor burning up cuz it can't turn the impeller head.
Are the seals still intact?

if ou took the impellar off adn ti still doesan't turn, i'd say the motor is fried.

Your bearings could be rusted.
I had an old PCX-40 pump with rusted out bearings (same style pump). Replaced the bearings and all was fixed.

Take a look at this thread (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1478286) where I detail the process of taking apart a Gen-X PCX40, replacing the bearings, and putting it all back together again.

Once you get it apart you can see the bearings and read off the numbers on the side to tell a bearing shop what you need.

I'd suggest taking it all apart until you can get to the bearings. Visually inspect and see if you can turn the bearings by hand. If they look at all rusty and don't turn smoothly then it's very likely the bearings preventing the pump from working. IF that's the case you can always try some WD-40 to see if you can un-seize them. Re-assemble (leave off wet end) and see if the motor starts to spin. If it does, then just get some new bearings.

Let me know how it goes!

tgunn,
Thanks for the help, i ended up sending the pump back in yesterday to Pacific Coast Imports and am hoping them are able to fix it for me. They will be recieving it by Monday and hopefully i'll have an answer by then or so. If they aren't able to help me then i will for sure be needing your help as it would suck to have to buy a whole new unit!

These pumps are built like a tank, so my best guess would be that it is the bearings. Hopefully Pacific Coast Imports can get it up and running for you!

Let me know if you've got any questions and I'll try my best to help.
