I bought a 4x54w t5ho fixture from aquatraders.com and im worried that im not gonna have enough light for my 60G (same footprint as a 55 just taller) so i was thinking about adding one 250W MH lamp, but i dont think I have room under my hood because of the fixture, is it possible to gut out fixtures and mount them on the hood to save space?

you most likely could have saved some money buying a retro kit in the first place.

I did it with an old outer orbit metal halide with 2 96 watt pcs. It has been working perfect for the last 2 months. It was pretty easy to do.

well i figure the only thing i may need to replace would be the reflectors, one that can be screwed into the hood....
