I am in the process of planning my next tank and I have a question about the pump I will need. I am planning on using a 1" scwd (wavemaker) that will have the only true 90 degree turns in the return. The rest will be 45 degree turns. The flow will alternate about every minute ten seconds (1m10s).
I am currently looking at the Gen-X PCX70HP (High Pressure) External Water Pump.
It has:
max flow of 1537.5gph; 15 PSI.
Max Head: 31.8ft
Speed: 3200RPM
1" intake/outake
Is this enough? do I need more gph? Any suggestions? I appreciate the help ahead of time.

are you planning on any powerheads? i wouldn't run 1500GPH through my sump unless it was huge

I am planning on my sump/fuge being around 75 gals. Is it too small for that pump? I am trying to avoid using powerheads if I can to keep a cleaner look.

usually its either closed loop or power heads. The reccomended GPH through the sump is 5-10X per hour while the display is more like 20-40X per hour so it isn't feasable to use your return as all your water circulation. Not to mention the micro bubbles from putting that much water flow through the sump

plus unless you have a skimmer that pumps 1500GPH you would be returning unskimmed water back into the display

Read that SCWDs are not the most efficient, but never seen the actually headloss. Since still planning and don't want PH in the tank, should also look into CL. Even if not using OM products, take a look at some layouts

As for flow through the sump also read that anything more than the gph rating of your skimmer is overkill, but I wouldn't get to wrapped up in numbers. I rely on my return to add flow to my display and currently run ~1000gph through a 75g sump (and have up to 2000gph) without problems. Have a bubble tower but believe the filter sock gets most of the bubbles from the returns, the baffles handle the skimmer.

I have a 180g Mixed reef with a 75g sump and use a PCX100 as my return and have no problems at all with it. I also have over 8000gph flow in the tank with powerheads and 3500gph flow with the reeflo dart and 4way closed loop. As for un-skimmed water going back to the tank, that is a given? You cannot process all of your flow as that is impossible. Even if you have all of your drains connected directly to the skimmer, the skimmer outflow will be mostly unprocessed water and only a small part will get actually skimmed. Skimmers work over the long haul not processing all the water at once. Over the course of a full day (24 hrs) your skimmer may process your tank volume 5-10 times depending on your skimmer model, make, type (countercurrent, recirc, cocurrent, beckett, mazzie, needlewheel, etc). The key with skimmers is efficiency. That is how much DOM it removes per pass, the more it removes the better you are.

Yes I think that the reeflo dart 4way closed loop as well. That design looks awesome and I think I might copy reef pirates final arangement. I was thinking about a DIY skimmer though I have not yet decided on a design that is good for this tank size. Thanks for the input thus far, very informing keep it up
