I have some very strange things happening with my nem
When my light are on it looks like it is going to die
then when the lights go out it is all wide and beautiful.
I have never had a nem that has done this before.
Anyone have a clue as to why it is doing this.
Here are some pictures I just took and I will post some more picture of it after lights out.

I would check all your water parameters, sorry I am not too much help, but it could be doing a lot of things, i.e. internal water change or it could be much more serious, keep an eye on it and test your water.

I dont think it has anything to do with the water, I just did a water change and its been doing this for about 4 weeks now.
but thanks for trying
Is your tank temp too high when the lights are ON? Do the lights heat the water too much?
Also was the anemone kept in a tank with insufficient light before you got it? Or have you recently changed your lights? It could be that the nem is reacting to strong sudden light.
Although I don't think this is it since the nem has crawled towards the light on the tank walls, it is a possibility!

the tank is always at 82.2
The tank it came from had the same lights i have & it been about 2 months since I changed my lights.

when the mouth opening is open that wide it is usually a sign of stress. Try moving it where water current is good. Mine did that too for a few days and move it where water current is good and it is doing fine right now. By the way, how often do you feed?

He has been doing it for awhile now, he was in better flow area last night and moved to the wall today. I feed him about once a week but he hardly ever takes it.
This is what he looks like now, its close to lights out time.
So he is going to start looking better now

He will get even bigger and prettier once the lights go out.

What are you trying to feed it and how big are the pieces?
- They should only be fed small pieces of food. Mine only eat tiny bits of mysis or flake (basically whatever floats by when I feed my fish) I wouldn't suggest feeding anything larger than krill. If the tentacles are not sticky and it drops the first piece of food, don't try another one, just leave it be for a week and try feeding again.
Do you have any clownfish trying to host in it?
-Clownfish can be rough on anemones, especially if the clowns are bigger than the anemone.
What SG do you keep the water at?
Auto or manual topoff? If manual, do you add the water in the evening before the lights turn off by chance?
-If you daily add topoff water in the evenings, you might try testing your SG and checking the temp both right before and right after you add the topoff water. There may be an issue with temp or SG swings and the anemone likes the water best right after topoff is added.
Just some thoughts, hopefully you figure it out. Its not unusual for anemones to shrivel up a lot for the first month or so while it adjusts to your tank's lighting and parameters, but this is a little bit weird.
Good luck!

I do have clowns but they do not go near it at all.
SG is at .023, the same as the lfs i got the nem from, I also get my salt water from them, as it is di/ro and I do not have an ro maker.
I top off every other morning.
I have been trying to give him mysis but he has no interest.
I am just going to leave it for now and see what happenes.
Thanks everyone for trying to help.
anf if anyone else has any ideas please post and I will check back tomorrow.
Thanks

The tank it came from may have had the same lights, but do you know how old those lights were? How long was the nem in your tank b4 you changed your lights? It seems to me, it is trying to adjust to more intense lighting, although I am wondering why it is attached to the glass & not a rock?

I changed my light before I got him.
I am not sure how old the lights are at the lfs.
and I am also not sure why he is on the back of the tank and not a rick, but that is were he placed himself and I dont want to move him , since I am having issues with him already.

I had the same problem after I changed my lights (although I didnt know that was the problem @ the time). All 4 of my bts went under the rock that they are attached to. They looked like yours for several days & would look better @ nite, but they would still take food.
They stayed there for several weeks, if not more, b4 3 of them finally started peeking out towards the light. 1 never moved & it shrunk to the size of a quarter w/ only nubs for tentacles. Luckily, I could turn the rock that he was attached to upside down, so he was towards the light & fed tiny bits of shrimp, scallops & silversides everyday. He is now about 3" & happy:rollface: .
You may need to put some egg crate or screen (from Lowes or Home Depot) over your tank until the nem adjusts to the lighting.
Also, you will want to cover your powerheads until he finds a place he likes.

So, BeccaB, let us know...how is the nem doing?

Just had to chime in because I'm having the SAME problem. I can totally sympathize. I got up at 7 this morning, and he was all happy with waving tentacles. Before I even turned the lights on, he had shrivelled up with only his little bright green nubs sticking out. All day, shrivelled up. So, I'm about to go home and check him out now to see how he looks. They are so tempermental. Also, mine had this long string of stuff, like mucous or some sort of tissue, extending out about 6 inches. I guess maybe that's some sort of waste or something?? who knows....
Good luck!!

Well just an update, nothing has changed.
I did a water change yesterday and he is still doing the same things, looks great when the lights are off and looks sad when the lights are on.
Someone told me that maybe the temp was to high so I got the temp down to 79.8 from 82.2 and its still the same no change.
At this point I am not sure what to do. Any sugesstions would be great.
Thanks

well, honestly that anenome looks to be on its way out.
how old is your tank?
I picked up a BTA last week and no matter what he just wouldn't settle down. died a few days ago. sometimes it just happenes or we buy one that has some other under lying issue.
you'll really have to watch your powerheads because it WILL get sucked in
