biological filtration.

liverock is the preferred choice for reef aquariums nowadays.

LR + protein skimming = 2 major components of modern reefkeeping filtration. (There are other various methods/tools as well.)

mechanical filtration (via a filter sock or filter floss pad) is also a valuable tool for maintaining a reef aquarium IMO/IME.

rock in sump isn't necessary but if you place LR in sump it should be fully submerged to maximize it's potential for biological filtration and to act as a refugia/cryptic area.

You sound like you are off to a pretty good start.

The only other thing I could think of would be a way to add some chemical filtration such as carbon and a pO4 (phosphate) remover... you could use a "reactor" (like a Phosban reactor) or a small canister filter running from your sump, or even a HOB filter would work.

And if you had any room to put some chaetomorpha macroalgae in your sump (you would need a light source as well) that would be a good thing, too...

:)
