I am setting up a 60g tank and I have barely any room uner the stand for a fuge (it's a cube tank). Well I was messing around with random tanks I have and found that a 2.5g fits perfectly in there right where I want it. So I am wondering, should I even bother with a 2.5g fuge? It's basically either that or nothing.

Thanks

I have a 2.5 gallon aquafuge hang on and I think any size is beneficial because it provides a breeding ground for pods. My tank is only 30 gallons though. I have chaeto in mine.

It is better than nothing, but I don't think 2.5 gallons is going to drop your nitrates much or produce many pods.

On a side note I love your sig about Irwin. He was one of a kind.

I recently set up a small 2 - 2.5 fuge with cheato, and it did seem to make a difference for my 180 and 100g displays.

Here it is when I first set it up, I harvest out a baseball size portion of cheato every week. It has also become loaded with various pods in just a few weeks.

What kind of difference did it make?

Hard to say with everything I was doing. I also started running carbon, phosban, a 5 gal bucket of sand for nitrate removal, and manual siphoning/removal of nuisance algae. So far the nuisance stuff hasnt made a comback at all and its been a few weeks. I've also been able ramp up my feeding a bit, and the extra food seems to have greatly benefitted my pod population. The little fuge is teaming with critters.

I'm thinking of a similar setup for a 2.5 gallon fuge. What kind of light should I use for housing a cheato ball and caulerpa? Also, would providing a sandbed be of any benefit in this setup for the pods or is it not necessary? I plan on having water for my main tank flow into the fuge and then into my sump containing a protein skimmer, bioballs, and my intake pump. Would the pods survive the trip through all that and end up in my main tank?

how about a tumbling algae filter. You could use chaeto, or even ulva.
