Is there such a thing as over skimming your tank? The reason I ask the question is that when I am purchasing equipment I would lean towards buying for the future. e.g. Mini Bubble King 200 to be used on a 90 Gallon sps tank to be upgraded to a 200 Gal at a later date. Looking for some input here on your thoughts

what ive always been told (and seen first hand) is that your initial skimming will be some crazy muck.. then trail off. From there you'll get skim in sperts. You obviously wont be hurting anything, just don't get discouraged..

Don't know if this is true, but I've heard you can skim out some beneficial stuff, like trace elements. If you're doing frequent water changes then this wouldn't matter.

Well I heard lots of things about overskimming when I was searching for my last purchase but did not find anythink on serious books including the Delbeek-Sprung's series. Then I purchased a Grotech 110 which is rated 110g and put it in a 25g softies tank. Nitrates never show up in the Salifert test kit except the cycling period in the very first weeks. Maybe Salifert is not a top grade test but it tells something anyways. I don't have problems with Ca and Mg in this tank, but alkalinity is somewhat at the lower side. I don't think this two info is related with each other though..

I'm running an oversized skimmer on both my tanks they both skim constantly I just collect less than I would with a bigger tank
