I have just upgraded a 45 gallon to a 90 gallon. I also added a refugium. Typical setup like I have seen here on these threads. My question is, The overflow line coming down from MT to the refuge(1 1/4 PVC) goes all the way down about an inch from the bottom of the refuge, then takes a 90 degree corner with perforated wholes. The pipe is not caped. and is covered with filter material.(cotton i believe) but there is a tremendous amount of large air bubbles. Like the water is on a rolling boil. Which intern creates tiny air bubbles back into my MT. And yes I do have a bubble trap but it does not seem to help much. If this is hard to understand I will try to post some pics.
I just want to know if this is normal. because I never see it in the pics anytime I look up Refugiums. I cannot believe that every pic I see the refuge was off....http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/5212/imgp1692dh4.jpg

Attach a filter sock to the incoming water line. This will remove the bubble problem.

Have a bubble trap but use filter socks as well and think the socks do the most.

Have no bubbles back to the display even with up to 2000gph going through the sump

Ok so that means that I need to cut the PVC straight as opposed to entering the refuge with a 90 degree turn. I previously had the sock on there but then it clogged so quickly it flowed over and out of the sock.

The filter socks I rotate through my sump (use only one at a time) are 100micron and 10x16". I'll try to swap them out every week but they have gone 2 weeks and more without flooding over.

I believe the one I used was a 200 micron. I will get the 100 micron and try that.

The 200 should if anything plug up less than the 100. What was the dimension?

I would cut off the pipe so that the exit is only and inch or two below the water level (that should be low enough to minimize any noise) and then put a filter sock on it. I use this one: filter sock (http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=PM-BG100&Category_Code=GFI). I usually change the sock out every 3 to 5 days when I have the pumps off to feed the tank. They wash really well turned inside out in the washer with a little bleach.

I will try that. Luckily I did not glue the PVC and that piont knowing I had this problem. So now I can modify it untill I can correct the problem...
Thanks A million.
