Does anyone run a display tank completely off of their return pump? Either going through an OM or a SCWD? Wondering if its possible or feasible to go without a closed loop and powerheads. Will be on a 4ft tank only. Let me know your thoughts on this.

depend what kind of corals you want to keep.
if you just want some low flow corals, i think so.

Depends how much flow you want through your sump.

Don't matter because my Fuge is going to be setup seperately from my sump. Sump is only going to house some extra rock and the skimmer return thats it. Fuge will be controlled via a ball valve and so forth.

you want to filter out as much water as possible.
let's say your skimmer taking in 600GPH, but you put 1800GPH through the sump, you skimmer is not going to catch as much as when you have a 900GPH return pump.
i have a in-sump skimmer, but the way i set it up, i filter 100% of the water comes down.
i can post a pic later today.

Skimmers not an in sump skimmer its a beckett skimmer that runs off a seperate pump for now. I may run it off of my main pump as trial an error. It just drains back into my sump.

I run a 265g with no submerged pumps in the water. I have a OM4 way with a 5,800gph HammerHead and my sump runs another HammerHead for return through a WavySea on one end and the chiller returns from the other. Hate the looks of PH's in a tank, all those cords and pumps look cluttered to me. This is also on a sps's dominate tank.

Thanks otty what I was looking for. Basically I am like you. Don't like all the powerheads and cords and so forth. This should work out fine then.

Bump. Anyone else? I also found a way to run all my water through my skimmer first :D A guy in our local club has his setup this way and I was quite amazed!

I have a 58 gallon tank with an empty display. I achieve mine with a small return and a closed loop. You cant see anything in mine and I have awesome flow. Look in my red house toward the end to see a fts with nothing visible.

Take a look at eductors/penductors. They increase the flow from the display outlets, and as a side effect of the back pressure on the return pump, reduce the flow through the sump.
