I have had a decent sized mushroom leather (toadstool) for about 5 years now, and I just noticed a small hole about the size of a dime developing right in the center of the "stool". Any ideas? Is this the way they split or is it a disease or parasite? Thanks for any info.

I have had it happen to just about every large toad stool i ever had.it seems like when they get real big deiterus or fish poop settles on it in the center and it erodes a hole in it.I just had it happen to a tyree green polyp that i grew out from a tiny frag to a huge monster.i cut it in half at the hole and made 6 frags out of the one half and left the other half in the display.its been about a month now and the mother and the frags have healed and look great.

Do you think it would be ok just to leave it as it is?

yea sure,i would blow out the hole with a turkey baster every so often to keep it clean and it may even heal over.

LOL... I did the exact same thing a few days ago.

Here's how it went down:

I did a tank upgrade about 2 months ago. Part of it involved the removal of all Xenia and green mushrooms.

About 1 month ago I took out my Tyree Toad b/c it had the last few xenia stalks on it's rock. I removed the Xenia and put the toad back in. About 3 days later I noticed an area on the toad that had turned white. Over the next few weeks the white spot turned into a decent sized hole that just kept growing.

In order to save at least part of it, if it continues, I took the toad out again and cut off about 1/3rd of the cap and cut out the necrotic tissue. All pieces (including the main part) were soaked for about 5 min in a Lugol's iodine dip. The frags all started to extend the polyps within about 3 hours. The main piece looked pretty bad (it shriveled up a bit) but it is starting to recover.

If you don't want to frag ours out though, I'd suggest at least trying an iodine dip. If it can fight infection when you get a cut, I'd assume that it can do the same for a toadstool.

Easy cure-
Blow decaying tissue away with powerhead.
Apply generous amount of superglue to exposed tissue.
Watch coral heal.
