I'm trying to make a small frag tank to take advantage of some extra lights/pumps/heaters I have lying around. The perfect footprint for me is 24"x24". Rather than spending the money on a nice acrylic tank (again, this is just a frag tank) is it feasible to take something like a 30 gallon XH with dimensions 24x12x24 and convert it? By this I mean place the tank front down, remove the back of the tank and cut it to become the back side of the new cube.
Just curious as I might start looking for a used cheap 30XH.
:) I'm assuming you're talking about a glass 30XH? It'd really depend on the glass thickness. I'm not sure what thickness of glass most 30XHs come with. If you can find out the glass thickness post in the DIY forum, a few people there will be able to tell you if the glass would be thick enough for what you're thinking.

It's tough to say if the front/back would be able to stand up against the weight shift, particularly because the pressure points would be entirely otherwise than it was designed for.
You could instead build a frag tank out of plywood and paint it with white or black epoxy paint. If you made clean cuts and it's well built, it could look pretty cool.

thanks, I'll post over there as well.
Widmer, that's an interesting idea.
