I want to get a pair of Black Misbarred Clowns but I am a little nervous given my experience with Maroon Clowns. I used to have a Maroon Clown which was incredibly aggressive and bugged the crap out of a few of my fish. I've read that the Black Misbarred Clowns are a more peaceful fish and can in fact be kept in groups, but I was hoping someone who has kept these fish might have some thoughts.

Also, is there any reason I should pay $90 each at my LFS when That Fish Place (and similar on-line vendors) sell them for $39.99 each?? Am I missing something?

I wouldn't keep more then a pair. I had a pair for a while, until the female indirectly killed the male. They were getting along fine for months, then the female turned on him, the male eventually jumped out of the tank. Sold the female to a fellow reefer. As for buying them at your LFS as opposed to online; have to factor in shipping costs, and not being able to see them in person. Out of all my fish I would say that about 60% of them are from online.

I only want a pair. I'm just worried that they will terrorize my other fish (which as of right now is just a Kole Tang in a 90 g, who is lonely). My Maroon was horrible and I ultimately had to get rid of her because she was beating up on my other fish. I love the look of the black clown, but I just don't get why my LFS is charging $90 each. Every weekend, they take 25% off of marine fish, so that would be $67.50 each plus tax, but that's still almost twice as much as I could get on-line. Even if it costs me $30 for shipping (which if I added a few more fish, would be free) . . .. I do like to see my fish before I buy them, though.

As far as them getting along with other fish, I don't think that will be an issue at all. To other non-clown fish my were fairly peaceful, nothing like the maroons that I had many years before.

I had mine with a flameback angel, and they pretty much ignored each other, even when the angel was hanging out near their anemone.

I have a black pair and one of them is a mis-bar female and reg pattern male and then another pair where the one is a black mis-bar and the other is a regular false perc and they get along fine together. They are not in same tank though.I think its hit or miss on the specific fish you get if they are going to be nice or not. The pairs I have are all fine towards other fish and have been okay towards hands in the tank. The black pair is going on 3+ yrs old now

I have a pair... and since they are just a color morph of the ocellaris... they are just as nice. Nothing like maroons. I found mine for $39 but, I usually see then for $49.

I have a black ocellaris and a maroon. They are both very aggressive, but the maroon is probably 5x larger, so the aggression is more noticeable with the maroon, although the black ocellaris goes after my fingers more

edit: they are not in the same tank and never will be :D

Here are my misbarred black ocellaris clowns I bought for $25/pair at a local club auction 5 years ago,

They were cheap because they're actually imperfect clowns. The pair with perfect markings went for the kind of money you're talking about.

These were donated by a breeder in Miami ..........
