I'm about 3 months out from setting up a new larger tank. I'll be moving from a 65g cube to a standard size 120 tank.
I want to move from the current lighting setup I have which is MH / T5 to a sole T5 fixture. I currently have an outer orbit 250w / 4xt5 light that is really nice. If I sell it I can pay for a good chunk of my new T5 fixture.
Should I go ahead and sell the light and purchase the other one now and rig it so that I can light my current tank with the T5s so that I can gradually acclimate them to the new lighting (same depth between tanks), or should I wait until the new tank is up and running THEN do it?
Will it matter haha? Did i just get up too early this morning :)??
Thanks for the advice!

Well to answer your question it could be a good idea to sell your current light and acclimate the existing tank to the new one. Although, it might just be a pain in the neck.
Will you be doing a complete transfer over or are you starting with new rock and sand? If you have to recycle it might be good to have two lights at once.

I'll use a lot of the same rock / sand, but will have to add to it in order to fill up the other larger tank. I'll cure the new LR and stuff in another tank (also something I should be doing I guess).
I just kinda dread having a foot hang off of both sides of my current tank haha.. guess I could put some plants under it!

Hmmm. Plants. That could be a good way to offset the cost of the new light.

haha
I would just wait, will the setup for the 120 fit over the 65? Doing it now or later should be a wash.

I think there will be more things to worry about if you sell your current light, like having to acclimate your existing corals to the new light.. making it 'fit'.. etc etc I would just wait until you get everything else set up. It will also make the transition much easier. Good luck either way!

I was thinking that too, but at the same time I figured I could go ahead and acclimate the corals to the light since both tanks are the same depth. I can make it fit with no problem, that isn't the issue.

I would just wait and have the corals adjust in the new tank.

well, then like I said it's a wash. whatever's most convenient for you.

i would try and sell it now. ask a reasonable, but higher price. if someone buys great, but if not, wait, then put at a price that you can make a quick sale. it takes time, so start now, just for convenience.
