I asked this question in my local forum but I thought I might get some different info on a larger scale here. I hae a 180 gallon mixed reef a lott of sps. do you think a single vortec would make a nice wave in it or do I need two

I would go with 2 at least if it were me. I plan on adding two more units to my 120 when I can afford to. Good luck.

I only have 1 on my 75 gallon, along with a maximod. I definitely think 2 would be best. If only they weren't so expensive!! :mad2:

I had a single on my 125gal 72" for a short time. It was hard to get a wave, but I could get one going. It really only circulated the water in 1/2 of the tank though. The undertow is so great with these that it only pushes water out about 2-3 feet then sucks it back in, thru the undertow. That's why two are really needed, one for each side.

You can't go with only one. Two will be the minimum. Three will be fine.
It all depends on the amount and structure of the rocks in the tank.
I have three pumps in my 125G mixed reef tank and am very satisfied.
