View Full Version : Should I temper?

I just priced a piece of glass for the front window of a plywood tank.

Starphire ~70"x36"tall.

The price was about exactly $1000 for 3/4"

I'm wondering if I could do 1/2" tempered instead.

See any issues with having the front being tempered?

I can get whatever I get, tempered for $120. If the price drops to $500 for 1/2" that gets tempered for $120 I'd be looking thru thinner glass (better view), I'd save on weight, and save some $$$.

Alternatively I can get cast acrylic for about $600 (1"). I am concerned with scratches as I'm going "reef". Is acrylic a bad idea in a reef application?

I would say go for the 1/2 inch tempered. It is stronger than the 3/4 inch non tempered and less glass to look through and less expensive.

My personal opinion is that acrylic is bad in reef tanks. but lots of people do it, you just have to be very very careful to keep from scratching it.
