Any reason why my damsel would change colors so significantly?

Believe it or not, Mood swings. Fish change color when frightened, cold, hungry, sick, aroused, sleepy, waking up and a host of other reasons. Not a worry unless it stays that way.

What type and how long of time was the change in pic?

Damsels lose there colour as they age.

well he's been like this for at least a month I would say.. He is actually a pretty old fish.. my brother had him in his crappy little tank for about 3 years I would say.. so, I would say hes at least 4 or 5 years old..

Is it not anything to do with gender change? I've also seen dominant males in groups be colored quite darker than the rest of the clan, but I don't really know.

Kdocimo, a bit off topic, but what is the tang in the second picture? I think it's an Atlantic blue tang, but I'm not sure. Looks great.

How "crappy" was your brothers tank? That looks like my velvet damsel which looses its vibrant colors and turns darker as it gets older. They are a hardy fish and prolly would have lived through a harsh environment and may not have had the right nutrients to give him his color, now that he is in your tank he is back to the color he is supposed to be...Sound possible?

The Bluefin Damselfish is also called the Black Damselfish, Bowtie Damselfish, Yellow-back Damsel, and Royal Damsel. As a juvenile, it is very attractive, with a gray body highlighted by bright yellow dorsally and blue pectoral fins. As the fish matures, it becomes uniformly black.

That was easy.

[edit...]

That sounded condescending and it wasn't intended. The above quote is from live aquaria.
