what are some side effects of high mag. I dosed my mag up to 1500ppm

That level should be okay for most organisms we tend to want in our tanks. There's not much data on magnesium toxicity, but Bryopsis can start having problems at that level, so other organisms conceivably might have issues at some point.

i dont think there are too many issues caused by high mag. i know some people who keep theirs in the 1600's. i keep mine right at 1470-1500 to help battle algae.

FWIW, I don't think that elevated magnesium itself helps with algae. The effect on bryopsis seems to be due to an impurity in some brands, like Kent Tech M. Some brands appear to not work despite high magnesium levels.

It also seemed that people dosing mag chloride were not having any sort of positive results when it came to killing bryposis. Many of the people using mag sulfate however, were having results. Perhaps it could be the sulfate, or the impurities in Epsom salt?

I'd bet a different impurity as the amount of sulfate in Tech M is likely fairly small compared to what is already present in the tank, but I can't show it isn't the case.
