Filter pads?

First off I would like to thank all the good, knowledgeable people here at RC that have put up with our silly newbie questions. I can only speak for myself when I say I have read all the good info on the newbies area, but some is alittle deep for me being a new comer to a great hobby, and way of life. My question is, I have 2 filter pads, 1 in my sump drain pan, and another on my skimmer. I was wondering how to clean them? They are starting to get brown spots, is this normal? I have nothing but salt in RO water and sand right now.

Sure, just soak them in a mild bleach solution, say 1/2 cup per gallon for a few hours. Rinse well and let completely dry. You're back in action.

That should be done every two weeks at a minimum.

Just remove them and rinse them under the faucet. If you have to rub your finger over the area until its clean and the water runs clear.
