Last week I got my new Octopus BH-1000 hob skimmer. This is their newer hob skimmer that has an OTP-1000 pump mounted externally below the skimmer body.
So, for a week I've had it running in a bucket of sw. It starts up just fine. There is no siphon to start, so it is pretty simple. The body gets very milky with tiny bubbles. Not too many micro bubbles getting back either.
I am very happy with this skimmer and it looks like it will work quite well. The only issue I have is with the noise of the skimmer. I have the muffler on the airline, and the sucking noise is very minimal. The noise coming from the pump (vibration) isn't bad either. However, either the venturi is very loud or the needlewheel chopping up the air is very loud. I can hear the noise right at the impeler area of the pump.
Is there something I can do to quiet this down? I think this isn't a problem with other skimmers where the pump is submerged because the water probably muffles the noise, but with the pump external, there is nothing to muffle the sound. I may try to take the volute appart and smooth any rough edges or transitions.
Any one with an external pump skimmer have this same problem? I'm not sure if it is a bad pump or bad skimmer design?
Any advice or similar experience would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I will try to post some pictures this weekend, I couldn't find much info on this skimmer and I know people are curious.
