They will likly fight. sometimes they work it out sometimes they don't. If it were me I would not put those 2 in a 180 but I'm sure its been done

The sohal tang is the most aggressive tang you can pretty much get. Putting him in with an already very territorial and aggressive purple is asking for trouble. Plus sohal grow to a very descent size, and a 180 will be outgrown quickly. The other input I have is do tangs in three's it takes the aggression off one specific one.

Sohal can indeed be extremely aggressive. I wouldnt recommend the fish by itself in a 180 gallon tank, just too much of a fish for that size. I wouldnt suggest putting the two together.

There are other tangs that would be better choices.

I don't think anyone thinks the sohal can't stick up for himself. :)

Agreed with Lisa...the sohal is not going to be in trouble of being bullied...

The sohal can stick up for itself but i dont think it will work out because they are both very aggressive.

Yeah, I'm glad to hear the fish store saying you shouldn't do it because it will kill your purple. That very well may happen. I would look into other somewhat aggressive tangs, mainly in the acanthurus genus. A powder blue/brown tang might work out nicely. They can be aggressive as well. Also, taking the purple out while the new tang gets established could help. Or moving some rock around, dividing the two with eggcrate for the first few days to see how compatible they are. Just realize that there may be a problem and expect the worse, having to remove a tang, but hope for the best. Goodluck.
