Is there a way to poison a mantis shrimp without taking it out of the tank or hurting the rest of the reef?

Not that I know of...

You could remove the rock he's in..
or you could electrocute him.. wall wart and contact probes would work in a six inch radius..

That sounds dangerous... Maybe try a hand grenade :)

Yep, interceptor will wipe out all crabs/shrimp/pods in the tank in a high enough dose while not hurting the majority of corals/fish.

Chucksta1: so you actually would put the end of a power cable into your tank and then plug it into the wall to electrecute a pest? I would think that could cause some major problems, or, it would just throw a breaker and not work at all. Have you done this before?

hairspray - but not in or on the tank. A little residual in the air supposedly kills them, as they are very susceptible to some chemical in it.

Good grief...it is unlikely that the mantis you have would amount to any significant trouble. You're more likely to kill lots of other things while trying to remove one harmless critter.

Ive never had a mantis so cant say ...but I would think with as agressive as they are they woudl be fairly easy to catch in a baited trap.

Otherwise, Chris' suggestion of a elevated dose of interceptor is about the only reasonable "poison" idea here so far

Im still lost as to why you don't just want to take him out and sell him back to a store. This thread seems pointless

might wanna try asking down in the mantis forums if you haven't already. Be forewarned tho, many in those forums love their mantises and the idea of purposefully poisoning one might not sit well with some.
On another note, my mantis is trained to swim out and grab her food on a feeding stick. She'll sit there and try to pry the food off, usually a piece of shrimp...which gives enough time to scoop her up. So as counterintuitive as it may seem, starting feeding it and train it to come out into the open for food. This might not work on the spearers tho.

A wall wart drops 120 vac to 12 60 18 vdc with a "kill" radius of roughly 4 inches .. I'll put the pics in my gallery.. gimmee ten..

There are shots of the mechanics in the gallery now... Yes it works.. Yes I've used it. Aptasia takes one shot. you can tell when it's working because you can see O2 coming off one side an H comming off the other. If you have a pest and spark it up for three seconds within an inch or so, the pest is either dead or unconscious.

pull the rock and pour some plain club soda down his hole. it'll come scurrying out with little collateral damage.

and ya, the mantis forum is full of mantis hugging hippies... :D

Well, lets think about this for a second, huh? Its only pointless if the situation I was in had another option. Obviously, if the LFS WOULD take him back, I would.......but they wont. The only pointless thing about this thread is your response.
