if I have sand in dt no sand in sump?

I have sand in my dt I put sand in my sump is that pointless?

some would say sand is pointless in the first place :D

but not going there, yes, if you have sand in yoru display you certainly do not need it in your sump. it is best to have yoru sump barebottom so come water change time you can take a few seconds with a shop vac and permanently remove whatever settles there, instead of letting it settle and rot like you already are doing in your display :D

is one a shallow bed and the other dsb??? then i could see the advantage - otherwise - like flyguy said - i keep my sump bb for ease of cleaning, just enough sand in dt to look nice, and a dsb in my refugium - best of all 3 worlds that way. JMO
