I accidently bought this:

Why is it only for freshwater?

would it work in saltwater?

No idea, can you return it?

I bought it online so returning it would be quite the hassle.

I'm thinking ill just go to a lfs and try to work something out.
Well unles i can use it then I'd be quite relieved

It probably will affect your pH.

I honestly have no idea, and that's why i'm wondering if anyone could provide some insight.

Most media is interchangable between SW and FW, bascially the popular ones are chemi pure and purigen that can be used in both. I don't see it being an issue, it looks like it is more for a cycle, which makes no sense because you want the tank to convert ammonia on it's own.

You can't be out that much money

ya it wasn't that expensive.

So I'm not that concerned about it.

I'm kinda more interested to learn what parameters restrict it for only being usable in freshwater.

Pssstttt......IT SAYS "FRESHWATER ONLY" AT THE VERY BOTTOM OF THE LABEL.

Oh come on now that was funny. I know that is not what this thread is about.....

I would like to know the difference between marine and fresh only products. If most products can go both ways then what makes some others different? That is apperantly the 64,000 dollar question here.

haha i know it says freshwater at the bottom, but that still doesn't answer the question at hand.

As I mentioned in the other thread, ammonium is cationic (has a positive charge). In seawater, there is a ton of sodium and other cations that can displace it from the media, which has a negative charge and binds it largely by charge-charge interactions.

It's simply a mix of carbon and zeolite. The zeolite removes ammonia very well in FW, not in SW. It won't hurt anything, but you'd be better off spending the money on straight carbon IMO.

i thought anions bonded to cations?

My basic concern Randy would be would it hurt the tank?

I know Bill has stated that it wont, but i just want a second opinion for good measure.

I do not believe it will have any negative effect on the tank. :)

Yes, anions (negative charges) bind to cations (positive charges). Ammonium is a cation, and any anion it binds to (like on the surface of a zeolite) can also be bound to by sodium (another cation) in its place.
