Hey guys..

can you tell me what makes a uv shield a uv shield?

I'm about to hang a 150w MH on my nano but it has no shield...
so I wanna know if I can just use the plastic lid that my nano already had to protect the pc's.. or what else would work as a uv shield..

Sunlight makes them. If its DE bulb i would for sure get a good shield like from Sunlight

The heat will likely melt or atleast warp the plastic. The DE bulbs need to be shielded from YOUR eyes as well as the tank. Some fixtures just use tempered glass, some use a tempered glass with a UV coating. Seems like the uncoated tempered glass is usually thicker than the UV coated/treated tempered glass but this is just what I have noticed from the differrent fixtures/reflectors I have had. I dont know for sure if regular tempered glass without UV coating/treatment needs to be a certain thickness.

Sorry, Yeah as DARG said its glass. I have used regular stuff before and it broke. so it might not have been thick enough.

I use them on SE also. Keeps salt spray from the reflector and the bulb. But most probably dont.
