View Full Version : How do you deal with Salt Damage to Wood?

I have salt damage on my newly purchased canopy and stand. They are both made of wood and are natural color. I was thinking of putting a clear wood protector on them but I really don't know.

I have scraped off the old salt/wood stuff that forms and am wondering what to do now.

Newly purchased But used? Was it like that when you bought it?

I have a wood canopy and stand.... for years, and no "salt" damage. If it is bare wood then I would definately seal it with something....

If it's warped at all, I'd really consider replacing the wood (particularly the stand due to structural reasons). The wood should be sealed before use, but if you can salvage it now I'd put a good waterproof seal on it.

I would reseal it but I would use a Marine grade sealer. You will most likely need to scuff the surface first so the Marine sealer will stick. Also test a spot first in an area that is out of view to be sure that the 2 sealers will work with each other & not bubble up.

NOW...after saying this, I would not do this by the tank. If its the canopy I would take it off & do it in another room. You dont want any chemicals leaching into the tank

If you have a SW tank then refinishing wood periodically is something that you get used to - no big deal.
