View Full Version : monti caps on glass

I was thinking about fragging some of my caps and glueing them on the glass for a different look. I know of course they'll get big and shade some areas, but that's not a huge issue. Has anyone ever tried this? How much of a pain was it later when it came to cleaning, etc?

Thanks

Kris

i always try to keep things off the glass especially since you cant clean around it...

I have a bunch of corals on my back glass. They are out of the way and I don't clean the back of the tank just the sides and the front. Getting the corals up there is a pain but once they start growing they latch on fairly well. I have also taken some corals and mounted them to cheap cleaning magnets and placed those on the sides of the tank so that I could move them for cleaning.

They also make magnetic frag plugs.

I've currently got a cap whose edge has been growing on the glass for a couple months now. I thought it might be neat, but the novelty is wearing off with as dirty as the glass around it is. Impossible to clean around without breaking, and algae build up around it. I'm gonna let it ride for a bit, but will likely end up breaking it off and keeping it trimmed away.

I don't have any of my sps growing on the glass, but I do have forests of xenia growing on both side walls. I love the action it adds to the tank while all my sps and lps grow in the rest of the tank. I also take anywhere from $50-100 worth to my lfs every month for store credit! Might as well try it out and see what if you like it or not.

Xenia makes more sense because it is easy to scrape off. I had some digitata growing on my back glass and boy did it ever spread. I eventually popped it off and it was interesting to see a sheet of digi. I was thinking of trying the frag mag technique, but I think it would only be a matter of time before it will out weigh the magnet. They have a product called a deep water magnet which is bigger and may make a better hold.

I also glued some on top of a MJ 1200.

You can see the digi on the back glass. Believe it or not this is purple digi but it didn't get enough light on the back glass

On the top right you can see a purple cap on the MJ

Until it spreads to rocks, crevices, etc... :)

Personally, I like it. I have a green monti and a Idaho grape monti growing on the glass of my 29 gallon Biocube. I used the frag magnets to hold them in place and over time the montis encrusted on to the glass.

Here's a pic of the green monti:

And here is a pic of the Idaho grape, also have a small frag of the green monti on the back of the tank:

I just posted this same question on another forum. Whats the best way to mount them to glass ( i.e. crazy glue type stuff )? Does the weight of the coral as it grows pull it off the glass eventually?

Thanks for the comments. I don't have a thread started, maybe I should. This tank has been goin' strong for over 2 years. I have the 150 watt MH upgrade from nano-tuners and the SPS and clam loves it! I have several pieces of ORA coral, I'm lucky my LFS is a dealer for them! Or maybe not, the wallet has been gettin' thin lately!

As far as mounting the frags to glass, I used some magnets from aqua-mags. Here's a link with pics:

It looks like the aqua mags would be the more sensible way to go. I could just move them around to clean the glass or at least until the encrust onto the glass. Thanks for the input.

I just used to cheap mag cleaners at Petco. The kind that don't float. I paid $4 for this one that my green cap is on. I had some crushed coral lying around so I superglued some on it. Less algae grows under it on the glass since it blocks the light. Once it attaches you don't have to worry about the weight on the magnet.

My orange cap and purple aren't on the back glass, but instead I have then growing on the overflow. Just used some epoxy to attach them to it, can't see the epoxy anymore.

My Idaho Grape monti is attached to a Frag Mag and has since grown onto the glass. The attachment to the glass isn't very strong, I could slide it around easily.

I'm running a Phoenix 150 watt 14k MH, supplemented with 2 - 36 watt 10K Actinics.
