Vortech 40w operating temp

I just got the 40w upgrade kit for my mp20 pump. It was very easy to install, took less then 15 minutes. Anyhow I was able to get a nice 1/2" wave going in my 70 gallon tank. I left it on short pulse mode working the wave for about 5 hours. The pump got very hot, if you touched the dry end motor and held it for a few seconds it would burn you. Is that normal? Will using it in this capacity shorten engine life for the pump?

The pumps are design to work at that temperature and will shut off automatically if it gets too hot. Running it on night mode helps reduce the stress on the parts and prevent premature failure.
