I was thinking about making my on water and had a few questions. What is the best mix, tap water or bottled water, and how long will it last?

Thanks

Never tap water. I would preferably invest in an RO/DI filter. I used to get my water from the local LFS and probably paid for 5 RO/DI filters until I finally made the invest. I aslo moved and had the room. As far as mixes. Instant Ocean is a staple.
p.s. bottled water can be just as bad as tap water.

RO/DI water from your own filter is the best (second best is distilled, third is RO). Put water in a bucket/ rubbermaid tub/ etc and add recommended amount of salt. Put a small powerhead (and possibly a heater) in the bucket and let mix for about 24 hours. As long as the water is kept moving, it will last indefinately. Don't forget to test the water and adjust it so that it matches your tanks parameters before using it.

IMO.....NEVER tap water. If you cant afford a RO/DI unit, or live where you dont have room for one. Go to the LFS & buy RO/DI water....or....Go to the store & buy Distilled water. Distilled water is going to be the closest thing to RO/DI water that you can get at the store.

Make sure its RO/DI water. Thats the best to use, There are some LFS that only use RO

If you can...its best to get your own RO/DI unit. You can get a OCEAN REEF + 1 from the FilterGuys for $199.00.

It will pay for its self in no time.......Check it out.....here is a link. If you call them ask for Jim...he's awesome
