I have a Current USA Fission recirculating skimmer. Its not the most exspensive, or best skimmer out there. It does however pull some decent skim. Has anyone modded these at all to make them perform better? All I have done so far is cut the riser tube in the collection cup down a bit and added an air pump with a adjustment valve. Like I said it works pretty good but I think it could perform better. Any ideas?

Not pretty but it gets the job done. I used the couplers from the original pump and attached them to the pvc. The top coupler will insert into the 1/2" elbow. I had to bore out the 1" elbow to get the bottom coupler of the skimmer to fit snug and then glued it. Then I used the "oh so professional" method of zip ties to keep it all snug. I emailed Kent marine and they sent me the eductor for free.

And since I had spare parts from another of the same skimmer I used its air injection piece and put it on the intake of the feed pump. Also, I extended the body height with the skimmer body that came with my sump and used a plastic container with a lid for the collection cup.

Interesting. How well does it skim now compared to before. Does it pull consistant foam?

It skims better than it did before since it is pulling air from two pumps and has a taller chamber. Also, it is much quieter compared to the original recirc. pump. And now it is easier to adjust how dry or wet I want the skimmate.

Oh I didnt notice. You used the original recir pump as the feed pump (feeds with air injected) and used a different pump for the recirc also with air injecting there? Correct?

Partially correct. I used a rio pump for the feed. I just used the pipe with the airline fitting from the original recirc pump and attached it to the intake of the feed pump with some clear hose.

I like the idea. My problem is limited room under the tank. Also the skimmer is actually outside the sump. So it cant leak.

I keep mine in the sump so I don't have to worry about leaks or over-flowing. The way I have changed-up the skimmer wont work outside of the sump. The recirc plumbing would leak.
