I have never used a metal halide before on my tanks as I have t-5. I was thinking of putting together a 250w over my 46G bowfront. I have a used hydroponic reflector I am going to wire up and hang it from the ceiling. I was wondering if I would have some heat issues with a hanging reflector as opposed to a reflector mounted in a canopy to top of the tank. I really don't want to spend money on a chiller.

Thankx
Drew..

Less heat with a hanging pendant than one enclosed in a canopy.
Light still gets just as hot, but the heat is dissapated more with the open air around the reflector. With fans, MH open air pendants barely add heat to tank.

I don't think you will have any issues.

I have 2*250 over my 58 ( which sits on top of the tank itself ) and a couple of clip on fans keep the temps in check --- really don't need the fans now the weather is colder.
