Does anyone know where I can buy live brine shrimp? I used to buy them from Jim at Aquarium Conservation, but I heard he closed up shop.
Reason being I bought a Banggai Cardinal to hopefully replace my female that went MIA. I was happy when I found them in the LFS at a nice large size, but in hind sight, I believe the reason for there larger size was b/c they are wild caught. The fish is not eating, and I have had luck getting fish to eat by adding live brine shrimp. Once they start feeding, they seem to try anything.

They are extremely easy to hatch yourself.

I know, I do all the time, But adult fish waste too much energy eating BBS. I needed adult BS to enrich with selco to feed an adult fish.

If If were you, I would have never have boughten a live one from my experience. HOF says that they sell tank raised ones they always have them when I go there) for 60 dollars and I aske if he could lower the price. He said he could get them in wild for 45 dollars, but the reason they don't is because they are much harder to keep, feed, and house, that most of them die. If I ever have a chance to buy a tank raised fish, I would always go for it, search for it even if I knew someone close buy breds them. Cardinals are so easy to breed in aquariums that you shoulding need to buy a wild one anyway. However, good luck with it you appeal to its decerning palete :).

You can't tell by looking at them. I have raised them before and this fish is to replace the female of my breeding pair. It was of a much larger size than typicaly seen for sale recently which will match the size and age of mine a bit better. The behavior, size and eating habits this fish lead me to believe it was wild caught, it was not advertised as such. Unfortunately tank raised aren't readily avaliable right now, and wild caught have new regulations in place, I'm not sure there is an all out ban on there collection yet but I'm sure it is coming. They have relativly small broods at a time which makes mass breeding difficult and costly. I've succusfully tried breeding them for the challenge of it, along with clowns, and I'd like to try gobies. My tank is all mated pairs.

The fish has stared to take frozen foods now. It just took some tempting with a little live food in the water.

No ban yet, they missed on the attempt (decided not to) to put it on the CITES really protected list. ORA is the best place to get them from, I know a few of the LFS, sell ORA stuff and could get you some if you wanted them. PC had some wild ones last time I was there and Joe said they were doing better than he had seen wild caught ones do in the past. Breeding these guys is going to be key in the future!

Yeah. It's sometimes hit or miss with the wild ones. They can be harder to get to eat, but those ones will actually nip at your finger if it is against the glass.
And I believe ORA is a little behind with the captives, making them hard to get for a little bit.

That is where I picked it up, and it has started to eat, it just takes a little more time and effort to get them to eat. I had an idea they may be wild caught when I bought it just from the size, but you seemed to have confirmed it. Tank raised all seem to come thru LFS as the same size 1/2 to 3/4 inch fish. This fish was a bit bigger and I am hoping of breeding age already.

I am also hoping it is the righ sex or else in a few weeks you will see another post.

Banggai cardinals looking for swingers!!!! :eek1:

Also, you got it at PC? In the last few weeks?
That's strange cause they were all crazy for food when they were in the store. I guess he is just getting used to your tank.
But glad to hear he is taking frozen.

Yeah, last friday. They were all in a tank on the left hand side. Middle row, 2 or 3 tanks in. Which is strange, they are usually on the right top row 1st or 2nd tank. Its doing fine and eating good now, still VERY skittish, but it's in QT with nothing natural at all, just some PVC. I'd be a least a little skittish myself!!!
