Recently my micros have receeded a few heads and some skeleton is showing. I have had them for 6 months in my tank now and up until about a week or so ago i noticed the heads receeding slowly.

Can someone list the common reasons why they receed? My tank is stable at 80 with a chiller. My salinity is usually at 1.023-24. It's an LPS tank only. I target feed once a week.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What is your mg level? Mine have receded when the mg dropped. They seem to prefer temps on the cooler side also.

i havn't checked my mg. I honestly really dont but i will do that right now. What kind of cooler temp?

Why would they prefer colder water? 80 degree's is pretty cold. I doubt your magnesium has anything to do with your tissue recession. If your alkalinity and calcium are stable then your magnesium levels will be fine. Especially if your doing monthly water changes.

Anyone have any suggestions or ideas that might help?

I disagree with this completely, your mag levels are influenced by what you dose and what your salt's baseline levels are. IO for example mixes at 1100ppm which is low enough to cause issues. Also the coral's preferred temp is relative to the coral's natural habitat; some acros are in shallow water that gets above 84 degrees while some lords and other lps come from water as low as 60 degrees.

Micros seem to prefer a lower temp in the 74-78 range for my experience. If they are aussies it would be optimal to keep them in the range from 72-76

Your mag needs to be between 1300 & 1500 for happy LPS, this is especially important for lords & micros.

Also, what are you feeding & how often?

thanks for your input everyone!
my mag is around 1400,water temp is at 79 now, and i direct feed 2-3 times a week and i alternate from rods food and mysis/brine shrimp. They seem to love it and i've had good growth on my acans and micros but this specific micro thats receeding used to be doing soo good and growing and all of a sudden it started to receed and i haven't done any major changes to the way my system runs. BTW the micros im talking about are japanese micros.

Sorry if this question is going to sound dumb or not but how do i lower my temps? Do i just change the set temp on my chiller to the desired temp? Kinda new to this so i dont really know what to do:/

Oh and i'd also like to know the answer to roktsintst's question (nice name btw)

thanks :)

Lower the temp. on your chiller and your heater.

Personally id leave your tank at 80 degree's. But thats just my opinion. Lets see what others think.

I'd shoot for 77-78. Good medium range where many corals can be happy and live in temperature harmony. As for the recession, could you have a predator or parasite? Are any other LPS effected? You could try a TMPCC or Interceptor dip if you think it is parasitic or bacterial.

my temp is consistent at 78 and all my other lps's are doing great. No problem with any other coral in my tank at all just that one micro. There was some burgundy tube thing on its skeleton but i took it off but 2 heads have now receeded still with it gone. I'll look into trying to dip it with something for parasites n what not. Hopefully that will work.

i think i remember seeing hydroids on the micro and thats whats probably stinging it and making it recede

ReeferChick85

yea thats what i thought it could be and i took them off, well tried to at least. Hopefully that fixes the problem. How do i get rid of those hydroid things anyways? Are they harmful to my corals cuz i gotta lot of those kickin it on my rocks n stuff.

What about a pest eating micros. I've heard repeatidly this is happening. I do think temperature as you have is a problem.

what kinds of pests you talking about? I've never heard of them but would definitely like to know more about pest eating micros.

so far my micros aren't receding anymore by the looks of things.
