ok well here's a 3rd. month update on my 10g nano.

The tank has about 12-15 lbs of live rock, 20-25lbs sand.

The water circulation is being provided by a Maxi jet-900 (i have been thinking about another small powerhead for the other side but not sure of a good but small powerhead)

it is being light by a 250 watt Metal halide (yes i know its overkill but it was cheap lol) the light is at 20" above the tank for now and will slowly be lowered to a minimum height of 10-12"

The live stock is
1 emerald crab
1 scarlet hermit crab
1 blue legged hermit crab
1 zebra legged hermit crab
1 red legged mexican hermit crab
1 or two nessarius (sp?) snails (havnt seen one of them in a while..)
1 cerith snail
Soon to be a fish but not sure what yet need some ideas.

corals.
motipora cap
possible dendro
green hairy mushroom
blue mushroom
pink birds nest
yellow polyps
green star polyps
and a few others i dont know the names of.

here are the pics...

i appreciate critiscm just not flamming about what im doing wrong so if you got some ideas for me id love to hear them... I am planning on getting a smaller heater (the one in there was an emergency when my last oen quite working) and also buying a scraper to clean up the coraline algae on the glass. so those to things are on the list to get fixed, along with a better background.

also i need some ideas about corals to fill in the spots and some new fish, i am also planning on getting a crocea clam for the front whenever my LFS gets one or i find a fellow reefer close is selling one.

Are you sure you have enough light for those SPS.......?

j/k :D That tank looks great, but why cant you use a razor blade for the coraline algae?

your dendro looks like a carnation coral...please google it as it is a very difficult coral to keep, even for a softy...however it could be a Colt coral, which is very easy to keep...

your other unidentified coral looks a lot like what is commonly referred to as a Tongan Mushroom...

the seriatopora (birdnest) might appreciate a better light source, the monti should be okay given how close to the light it is but PC's dont provide and adequate amount of PAR for SPS to thrive...

tank looks nice...good on you..

The current tank info is wrong, he said he's using MH now.

The heater wouldn't even be noticeable if it wasn't so high. But if you're going to replace it, you might want to consider using two instead of one. They'll work together and neither one will be able to really hurt your tank. You'd only be in trouble if both of them failed.

i think it might be a carnation coral now that you point it out, ive looked at the colt coral before, but just that everyone says its so easy and mine is not doing that well makes me think it might not be a colt, i am going to try and move it out of the light and see if it still does okay, if so then i guess that narrows it down to the carnation coral.

a razorblade is what i meant as a scraper lol just my terminology i guess.

well since i wrote this post you can take the mexican red legged hemit off the list, about three hours after i added him my zebra hermit decided he liked his shell better =(...so im gonna go the LFS and buy a bunch of shells for the crabs cus i definitly dont want them going after my snails next.

free meal and free house, the crabs will kill the snail every time...little opportunistic buggers...

it wasnt a snail he killed, it was another crab. so far i havnt noticed any agression towards any of the snails, but we will see how long the cerith snail lasts.

Clean the glass a lil better.........lol (j/k every reefers worse job)

The lighting is awesome have to say.......nice overkill

Crocea clams are hard you might want to try clams direct excellent record and excellent source for clams

if that is a carnation coral get rid of it....will not surivive in a 10g

the birdnest should be moved up a lil higher to the light for better growth.....

As far as fish I recommend firefish, a single true perc, clown gobies, neon gobies, goby/shrimp pair

or

sexy shrimp

I have two snails left from my hermits lol
I need to get some new shells

i think im gonna see if i can find a local reefer that has a tank suitable for the dendro, i know i had mentioned it to reef_doug a while back so if you happen to read this i would be intrested to talk to you about this coral sometime.

otherwise you guys have some coral sugestions for me? i still know practically nothing as to what kind of corals are available out there, i know i like frogspawn and brain corals (sorry for just using common names but im ignorant when it comes to the species of corals) but are they good corals for nanos?

i did have a true perc but it died jumping out of my covered tank so im not sure if ill give another one a shot, also they never get good ones up were i live. i bought mine from a reefer who was taking down his tank.

ive heard clams are difficult but thats half the reason i went with halides so im going to do a bunch of research and hope i can get one once my tank has matured for a while with the halides.

I recommend you get a tripod for your camera, you'll get much better pics ;) .

You might consider getting a HOB filter for your second water flow source, While ordering it get a smaller heater that will fit in the HOB filter. That way you accomplish two things at once, add flow/redundancy and hide the heater.

also if you have good access to the back of the tank just spray paint it black.....that is the best background. look in to 2 of those korella(sp?) pumps....they do good work and look much better then that maxi jet. any antic lighting? what bulb are you using. if no anitc then you might want to rock a 14-20k bulb to get some blue in there

i like the monti cap, as far as suggestions... take that maxijet out and give it a good cleaning

i recommend the 14k phoenix bulb

Also clams are hard but do your research and you should do fine I recommend a maxima for your tank

frogspawn and hammers are always nice
you might want to try trumpet or neon green candycane coral
also a duncan would go well

You might want to hold off on the brain until you do a lil more research

i have a ten with a 1200 and a hydorflo nozzle; i don't think its particularly intrusive and the flow in the ten is like a wavemaker for me

thank you guys for all the responses really have me thinking now, the bulb is a 14k hamilton but it is kinda old, ( i havnt really worried about it being old since i have 250 watts on a 10g lol)

but once i get through this seasonal days i am gonna plan on ordering another water flow source and a smaller heater. and i definitly like the idea of painting the tank but i have little access so if i were to do it, it would have to be by brush.

i am now having a problem with my Coeruleus mushroom clising every time i turn on the halide so i am gonna try and move it around and see if i can keep it from getting shocked by the light, and also the dendro type coral is not doing any better under halides so i am still looking for a new home for that coral.

Zebra crab killed the crocea snail now lol
