hi all , just came home from lfs with my first couple of lps corals, 2x green trachyphyllia brains. my question is ,in a 24 inch deep tank under 150watt 20k lights where is the best place to put them ? i see photos of them in the sand but the guy from the lfs told me to stick them half way up in the rockwork. any thoughts would be appreciated guys !

Trachys are found in the sand in nature. If they are wellsophylias they are usually attached to rockwork and will work better on the rocks. In my opinion the trachys should be left in the sand like they are in nature. They have a cone shaped base and are able to actually bury themselves once they are in the sand.It is a older term but trachys used to be called sand brains.
I am in no way saying they can not live on rockwork. They just seem to prefer life in the sand.

thanks for the reply oddballs, it does make sense to put them in the sand,my concern is giving them the right amount of light they require. i have a 6x2x2 with a 48 inch double mh light unit, so do i put them directly under the lights or in a more shady part of the tank ? any advice is much appreciated thanks !
