They grow rather quickly under the right conditions, mine has 10 heads on it right now and I have had it just 6 mos.

I've got 1 original head and 5-6 baby heads the size of a pencil erasers and I'm only had it a month and a half. I feed mine :D
Surprisingly, the mother head can eat little pieces of silverside

My Duncan Colony is over 80 heads. :)
When I first got it about a year ago, it was only 30.
Under the correct conditions they grow very quickly.

give them some food and they'll grow like hell.
Mine catch mysis when I feed my fish and they grow faster than most anything in the tank. Mine started as one head back in Feb and now has 10+ heads. They're packed in there too tight to count as it sits now. My duncan colony is one of my favorite corals in the tank.

Mine have also grown rapidly. Does anyone frag Duncans? If yes, how?

I think the 5 heads I bought 8 months ago are around 80 in number now. To frag you just break the stems. The stems will heal over and new heads will grow out of the fractured end. In my opinion these are very hardy corals.
Great looking example in the pic above this post

Indeed they grow like weeds. I started with 6 heads and have probably 15-20 after 4 months. I know everyone says medium flow but mine really seem to like getting whipped around by my new vortech, though its random flow that comes on and off. They have certainly colored up and extended more since I put in the vortech.

Great thread. I have a single polyp that I bought a month and a half ago, it seems to have 3-5 very small "warts" in the fleshy part where the polyp extends out of the calcium tube--- they only appear to be small half-pea sized bumps right now, but were not there two weeks ago. Are these small heads about to form?

Oh, BTW here is a pic of mine, from several weeks ago before the warts appeared.

WOW!!! That's amazing! I also have a duncan that I feed everyday, but nothing at all the growth like yours! What "secret" food are you feeding them?

I will take a pic next time I go to my dads office
this is the Jack Gerstein patented feeding meathod
Hakari large saltwater fish food
put 1 piece on EACH head
Duncans consume the food with all the pumps off
Duncans come back out aout 5 min after finishing the food
repeat steps 2-3 more times untill polyps appear to be ready to burst
do 1-2 times perday:D

I just picked up my first duncan a few weeks back. It only has 2 heads.
What water conditions do these guys thrive in?
thanks

Keep your water quality high. Different duncans respond differently to water flow. My colony has been three different tanks all with different levels of flow. Mine have done the best under moderate indirect flow. Many people disagree on lighting. My colony was originally under 250W Metal Halides mixed with 6 54w T5s. It was 12 inches from the light. It grew amazingly quick. Then it was under T5s, Now it is under the Elos Led Fixture. Under lower lighting be sure to feed often to maximize growth rates.

Thanks for the response.
Mine is in the sandbed so its about 21" or so from the light. I run VHO 12hrs a day and 250mh just a few hours a day. It looks like its getting some decent flow by the movement. I dont feed it directly but I do feed fozen cubes everday and it does get some scraglers from that. I was wondering if the sand will affect growth since its mounted there?

I have always kept mine on the sand bed. IME this results in no negative effects. Is yours growing quickly? If you keep it lower in you tank, frequent feedings will enhance the growth. Or if you like the lower upkeep method, you could just move them closer to the light. :)

could someone post pics of duncan baby polyps... I just got a colony of approx 38 heads... they all appear to be mature. How do these guys grow? split? bud? grow another branch/head out of the skin?
michael_cb_125
12/04/2008, 02:27 PM
They will bud out of the main stalk. It will start out as a small bump, then will grow until the head breaks through. They can start new heads either mid-stalk or right beside mature heads.

I think its growing ok, the heads have gotten bigger and the stalk has as well but no more heads are developing.
