Could be some sort of sponge...
What shape is it? Is it symetrical?

I've had what looks to be a red coralline algae that fluoresces. Could be that?

My coralline algae will fluoresce when it is stressed or dying.

+1 to gbreynol. My algae turns a nice bright orange when it is dead/near dead.

If I distress my coraline(not the purple or pink, only the red/dark red) it floresces under LED's (i dont have actinics) but I also notice it floresces from time to time anyway. I have NOT noticed any of the coraline dying anytime after that, this is just my experience.
