View Full Version : Enough flow for a 29 gallon?

I'm in the process of setting up my first salt aquarium - a 29 gallon. I want to use Koralia powerheads, but I'm not sure which ones will provide enough flow in my tank. Would a K1 and a nano be sufficient? I'll also be running a Remora skimmer on the tank, which should add a bit more flow. Any input is appreciated.

I have used the 1s before and they really dont do to much. I have a pair of them in my water storage tank (29 Gallon) and the flow seems minimal. What kind of corals are you going to be keeping? Flow is one of the hardest things IMO do dial in properly. Trial and error is the only sure way to get it figured out.Your corals will tell you when you got it right.

Since it will be my first salt tank, I'm going to start with fish only and add corals once I feel that I've got the hang of it. When I do decide to add corals, it will most likely be just softies. When I have more experience I may try keeping some SPS. I've read that softies require less flow than SPS & LPS - is that correct??

What corals are you keeping in your tank, Hemicuda??

I would do two K1's, I have 2 1's and a 2 in my biocube 29

I have 2 K1s in my 29 and they really don't do a whole lot.

What would you guys suggest? A bigger Koralia or a different powerhead?

Maxi-Jet 900, modded.

A modded MJ 900 would rock a 29 gallon.

I have a K2 and K3 in a 29 SPS tank.

Well, I'm sure you all know much more than I do, but wouldn't two smaller powerheads give more even flow over the tank than one stronger powerhead? What does the mod on the MJ 900 do?

Heres a link to the maxi jet mod Erin

It pretty much turns a maxi-jet into a hydor on steroids.

Two powerheads would give you more random flow which is a good thing. I wouldnt worry a whole lot about flow right now if your just going to be keeping fish for awhile. When you start getting into corals then it would be a good time to start looking at more flow.

Which mod is it? I tried to search it on the site, but there's several upgrades/mods for the maxijets. That link you gave me didn't work again. This computer is like the world's biggest spazz - I'm pretty sure it could benefit from a good kick.

You can find how to mod a MJ on youtube. Bassically you are making some cuts and drilling some holes to increase water uptake and output.

35x your water volume is the formula that I follow.

Erin, I am not sure whats going on with my links, but I think its me and not your computer. Just do a search on marinedepot.com for maxi-jet mod and they will come up.
As for water movement, it depends on what kind of coral you want to keep. If your going to keep sps, you should shoot for 25x to 30x turnover of tank volume. In your 29 gallon you would be looking at about 700-900 gallons an hour. You wont need that much flow just starting out keeping fish and a few softies.
